A good paint job can elevate a room instantly – but a bad one is just as quick to disappoint. While painting might seem straightforward, professionals know that small mistakes can quickly lead to patchy walls, wasted time, and disappointing results.

That’s why it helps to understand exactly what not to do. From choosing the wrong paint to skipping key prep steps, paint experts follow a few non-negotiable rules when decorating their own homes.

By learning which decorating mistakes professionals always avoid, you can achieve a smoother finish, better durability, and results that last. Here’s what one paint expert says they’d never do in their home – and what to do instead.

    Mistake #1: Buying cheap paint

Even when you’re renovating on a budget, there are some areas where cutting corners simply doesn’t pay off – and paint is one of them.

‘Never go straight for the cheapest option, just because it’s the cheapest – in high-traffic areas, it’s worth spending a little more for something quality, durable, and easy to maintain,’ explains Michael Rolland, managing director at The Paint Shed.

Choosing a higher-quality paint will give you a smoother, more professional-looking finish and reduce the need for frequent touch-ups later on. If funds are tight, prioritise investing in better paint for the rooms guests see most, such as the hallway and living room, where durability really matters.

    Mistake #2: Skipping swatches

Be sure to choose quality paint brands, such as Benjamin Moore Benjamin Moore / Maxwell Attenborough

Have you ever fallen instantly for a paint colour in a shop? While it may look stunning under showroom lighting, it can appear completely different once it’s on your walls at home.

‘Colours look totally different in each room, at different times of day, and under different lighting,’ says Michael. ‘Paint experts always try a few small patches.’

It’s advisable to paint a small test patch or pin up a swatch card in the room you plan to decorate. Watch how it changes throughout the day and take photos to compare before committing.

Mistake #3: Painting without a plan

    Farrow & Ball

It’s easy to throw on your overalls and dive straight into painting without a clear strategy – but this is something professionals always avoid.

Michael explains, ‘Impulsivity might be fun, but it can lead to wasted paint, uneven coverage, or a poorly prepped surface – all problems you’ll have to fix later.’

Before you start, map out exactly what you need, the order you’ll paint in, and how you want the finished space to look. If you’re decorating with others, assigning specific paint zones to each person can also help keep things efficient and stress-free.

    Mistake #4: Rushing drying time

Applying multiple coats of paint is essential for even coverage, long-lasting durability, and bringing out the true depth and tone of a colour.

‘Painting takes time – not just while you’re working with the paint, but also while waiting for each coat to dry,’ Michael says. He adds that painting on wet paint will only lead to streaks, peeling, and an unprofessional finish.

If you’re keen to speed things up, try opening windows to improve airflow, gently warming the room, or using a dehumidifier to help each coat dry properly before moving on.

    Mistake #5: Painting over mould

While paint can disguise scuffs and stains, some issues simply can’t be covered up or ignored – and mould and mildew are among the most serious.

Michael explains, ‘Experts know that this just hides the problem, and it’ll come back with a vengeance.’

Before painting, always treat wall mould properly by cleaning the affected area with a mould remover or a mix of water and mild detergent. Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying any paint to prevent the problem returning.
