Skip Bin Firm Fined for Dumping on Private Land

A skip bin hire and waste removal company has been fined $60,000 for illegally dumping asbestos containing waste at a southwest Sydney property and failing to comply with an NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) direction to remove it.

Detailed evidence gathered during an EPA investigation found Hy-Gene Skips responsible for depositing over 18 cubic metres of mixed waste at a vacant Gregory Hills residence in May 2025.

The Peakhurst-based business then failed to abide by an EPA clean-up notice requiring it to remove and lawfully dispose of the waste, including fragments of asbestos containing materials (ACM), by late June.

NSW EPA Executive Director of Operations Steve Beaman said Hy-Gene Skips’ actions were irresponsible and displayed a blatant disregard for the environment, the landowner and the local community.

“Illegal dumping is a selfish shortcut undertaken at the expense of the environment, communities and, in this case, the landowner,” Mr Beaman said.

“Hy-Gene Skips exploited the good faith of an individual who thought they were paying a business to help them do the right thing and dispose of their waste lawfully. Instead, it was dumped at a vacant property so the company could pocket more of a profit.

“Not only did the company deliberately contaminate private land but it subsequently disregarded the EPA’s directions to clean up the site. As a result, the landowner had to shoulder the clean-up costs of removing and properly disposing of the waste.

“Businesses that are paid to remove waste have a very clear obligation to dispose of material at a facility that can legally accept it. Not doing so is not only illegal but it also undermines public trust in legitimate operators who do the right thing.

“There is no excuse for illegal dumping, and we’ll continue to take firm action against both companies and individuals who try to avoid their legal responsibilities or ignore directions to rectify harm caused.”
