Sunrise Academy in Carlton Colville, Lowestoft, which is part of the Eastern Education Group, has created the new facilities to help its 52 students — aged 10 to 16 — eat more healthily and learn about food and nutrition as part of the school day.

The investment is part of a broader revamp of the school, which provides SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) provision, and aims to give every young person the best possible chance to succeed.

To mark the opening, Labour MP for Lowestoft Jess Asato visited the school to officially open the new kitchen.

Dr Nikos Savvas, chief executive of the Eastern Education Group, said: “The opening of this new kitchen at Sunrise Academy is another important step in the transformation taking place across all of our SEND schools.

“By creating a modern, welcoming space where students can learn about and enjoy healthy eating, we are expanding their opportunities both in and beyond the classroom.

“We were delighted that Jess Asato MP was able to join us to celebrate this milestone, which reflects the dedication of our staff and our ongoing commitment to ensuring every young person receives the support, respect and high-quality education they deserve.”

Ms Asato said: “Thank you to Sunrise Academy for inviting me to open their fantastic new kitchen — it’s a brilliant investment in both students’ wellbeing and their futures.

“Healthy, nutritious food is fundamental to a child’s ability to learn, focus and thrive. The new kitchen will also give students the chance to learn about food and cooking — skills which set them up for life.”
