Laing O’Rourke has been confirmed to deliver a £250m cancer centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

The project, funded through the New Hospitals Programme and the Department of Health and Social Care, will provide a regional Centre of Excellence in cancer care serving over 60,000 patients annually across Sussex.

It will sit alongside the Louisa Martindale Building, which the firm completed in 2023. The new facility marks the second stage of the hospital’s 3Ts redevelopment.

The multi-storey building will include high-precision radiotherapy in the basement, expanded outpatient clinics and assessment zones above, and a top-floor inpatient ward with views of the sea.

Designs were drawn up to prioritise patient wellbeing and integrate advanced technologies, including AI-powered clinical research spaces.

An Oncology Acute Assessment area is intended to reduce A&E attendance for more than 1,000 patients annually.

Public realm works will create landscaped gardens between the new centre and the Louisa Martindale Building.

Peter Lyons, Laing O’Rourke managing director, said the contractor would draw on lessons from the adjacent scheme to improve efficiency and minimise disruption.

He cited the use of digital design tools and offsite manufacturing, although no specific suppliers were named.

Dr Sarah Westwell, consultant clinical oncologist and chief of service for cancer, said the facility would offer “privacy, dignity and hope” to patients and support research integration.

The client for the scheme is University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

The scheme sits outside the 10 NHP hospitals which are set to be delivered using 80 per cent modular techniques.
