A warning has now been issued to homeowners
A kitchen fire which broke out at a house on Anglesey has sparked a fire service warning. A photo has been released of the damage, caused after a hob was accidentally switched on. Nearby items caught fire as a result.
A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service statement said: “A recent kitchen fire in Ynys Môn started when a hob was accidentally switched on, igniting combustible items nearby. The occupiers were out, but working smoke alarms alerted a passer-by, who called the fire service. Thankfully, no one was hurt.”
Fire chiefs said the majority of accidental dwelling fires in North Wales start in the kitchen. Thy urged people to reduce the risk by remembering to:
- Always switch off your cooker hob when not in use – ideally at the wall too.
- Keep flammable items well away from cookers and heat sources.
- Stay alert and present – never leave cooking unattended.
- Keep it clean – grease and fat build-up in ovens, hobs, air fryers, and grills can easily ignite.
- Clear the clutter – keep tea towels, packaging, cookbooks, and loose clothing away from cookers.
- Turn saucepan handles inward to prevent spills and knock-overs.
- Use appliances safely – avoid matches for gas cookers and consider safer alternatives to chip pans.
- Unplug appliances when not in use and never overload sockets.
- Avoid cooking under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Fit and regularly test smoke alarms (we recommend testing once a week) , and consider heat alarms in kitchens.
