JR Scaffold Services supports 19th century church restoration

JR Scaffold Services has provided scaffolding solutions to support an ongoing essential renovation project of the oldest church in the Diocese of Paisley, St Fillan’s Church in Houston.

The firm installed custom-designed scaffolding at the landmark building, located at the entrance of the Renfrewshire village, to allow its client access to the site’s roof. This enabled the restoration team to fully remove and replace the existing slating, helping to prevent the restoration project from halting due to weather conditions over the winter months.

The installation took two working weeks to erect, with the support of contracts director John Jack and in-house temporary roof advisor Owen Stoney, who led the project alongside three expert scaffolders.

The solution was uniquely designed by Gallery Access Solutions, utilising a mixture of Cuplok scaffolding and Uni Roof by Altrad Dessa, which allowed the team to erect the structure at roof level rather than within the limited ground space surrounding the church.

Originally built in 1841, the church building is located very close to the main road. However, JR Scaffold Services worked closely with designers to ensure all scaffolding met all road and pavement regulations. Additional beam work was also incorporated to accommodate the restricted space at the rear of the church.

Temporary roof advisor Owen Stoney said: “This was an exciting and complex project to be involved with, as it allowed us to showcase our adaptability and expertise for our client, ensuring that the required scaffolding was erected around the old, iconic building.

“We worked closely with the designers to ensure that everything was set up in a way that provided access for restorations to happen safely for both those working on the church and those using the pavements and roads surrounding the site.”
