Speaking on behalf of Marshalls PLC, Johanna Elvidge revealed the best ways to transform the front of your home without breaking the bank.

She recommended spending some time defining the pathways and edges of your front lawn.

“Kerb and lawn edging can help add definition to the front of your home,” the expert explained.

“This design choice can make your driveway, pathways, lawns and flower beds appear neater and well-kept.”

    WISTERIOUS BUY

Aldi’s £16.99 buy could add £10K to your pad, it’s ideal for Bridgerton fans

She pointed out that the “structural addition” can help to “add both charm and cohesion to the space.”

Elvidge gave some examples of how to best do this, including adding a brick border, concrete edging, or gravel.

“Try to choose edging that will complement your home’s external aesthetic and define the boundaries of your grass or paved areas,” she said.

She also advised homeowners to do some landscaping in their front yard.

“Liven up your home’s exterior with some plants, flowers and trees,” Elvidge suggested.

“This will not only add colour to your property but also help soften the appearance of paving and concrete, making your home appear warm and welcoming.”

She suggested adding hanging baskets and plant pots to the front of your home.

According to the green-thumbed pro, these are considered a great option due to their “easy maintenance and rotation of seasonal plants and flowers.”

The home expert highlighted the importance of a well-maintained front garden.

“First impressions matter, not only for people but also homes,” she explained.

“Since the front of your home is the first thing guests, passers-by, and potential buyers see, making sure it is well-kept is not something that should be overlooked.”

Home upgrades that add the most value to a house

The best renovation to add value totally depends on your property, the local market and your potential buyers.

Zoopla shared a list of upgrades that will instantly add value to your home.

    1. Loft conversion – increase of 15%
    2. Off-street parking – adds £50,000 to property price
    3. New kitchen – increase of 15%
    4. Garage conversion – increase of 15%
    5. Cellar or basement conversion – increase of 10-15%
    6. Open plan living space – increase of 3-5%
    7. New bathroom – increase of 3-5%

She cited a study by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which showed that “kerb appeal can increase your property’s market value by as much as 10%.”

As well as focusing on your garden, Elvidge also recommended freshening up your fences, gates, and front doors.

She added that cleaning your paving and driveway is another way to easily elevate your home.

“By washing away any dirt, moss or debris and removing any unwanted weeds and plant growth, you can create a welcoming entryway to your property,” Elvidge explained.

“An attractive and modern paved driveway can create a strong first impression.”
