Emergency services flocked to Hastings seafront near Queens Apartments on reports of a carbon monoxide incident in Robertson Terrace at around 6.47pm yesterday, December 2.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service liaised with SGN and high levels of carbon monoxide were found to be coming from a diesel generator at a commercial premises.
This affected flats at Queens Apartments and all occupants were evacuated.
The fire service said a “significant number of people suffering from symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure” were assessed by South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb).
A spokesman for Secamb confirmed 16 people were assessed and treated at the scene before seven people were taken to hospital.
The A259 was also closed during the incident.
The full statement from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service reads: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called at 6.47pm on December 2 to a carbon monoxide (CO) incident in Robertson Terrace, Hastings.
“Crews liaised with SGN, identifying high levels of CO coming from a diesel generator at a commercial premises, affecting surrounding residential flats. All occupants were evacuated.
“Firefighters used breathing apparatus and gas monitors during the incident, isolating the generator and ventilating the premises.
“A significant number of people suffering from symptoms of CO exposure required assessment by Secamb.
“The A259 seafront access was closed by police to enable emergency services to deal with the incident.”
