Chepstow Road in Maindee, Newport, has fully reopened following a major emergency incident that led to road closures on Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to the area at around 7am on Thursday, February 5, after police received a concern-for-welfare report involving a man on Chepstow Road.

Gwent Police confirmed officers attended the scene alongside the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service.

    A police spokesperson said:

“We received a concern-for-welfare report for a man in Chepstow Road, Newport, at around 7am on Thursday 5 February.

Officers attended along with the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Welsh Ambulance Service.

The man has been taken to hospital for treatment.”

Witnesses say that a man was seen on scaffolding at the location from the early hours of the morning. Emergency services worked to bring the situation to a safe conclusion and ensure the man received appropriate medical help.

One witness said the man appeared to be experiencing a mental health episode.

The road was closed for several hours, with traffic diverted from the area near a local stitch shop, as emergency services dealt with the incident.

Public transport was also affected, with Newport Bus advising that inbound services were diverted via Wharf Road and Corporation Road earlier in the morning.

By late morning, all road closures had been lifted, and emergency services had left the area.
