    A MAN has been arrested after a car smashed into scaffolding in a busy city centre.

    The vehicle collided with the work site on Edinburgh‘s Queen Street and Hanover Street around 2.40pm today.

    The scaffolding became insecure after being struck by the motor.

    Emergency crews were called to the scene in the centre of the capital as reports came in.

    Queen Street was closed down in both directions between Frederick Street and Hanover Street as the incident was handled.

    The public were urged to avoid the area over the insecure scaffolding.

    Motorists and buses were also diverted away from the scene.

    Fortunately nobody was injured during the collision.

    A 33-year-old man has been arrested for alleged road traffic offences in connection with the collision.

    Cops say their probe into the crash is still ongoing.

    The road has since been reopened but a section of the pavement on Hanover Street is still closed.

    A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Hanover Street and Queen Street in Edinburgh have reopened after a car collided with a scaffold, causing it to become insecure.

    “It was reported to police around 2.40pm on Friday, 2 January, 2026.

    “There are no reported injuries.

    “A section of footway on Hanover Street remains closed.

    “A 33-year-old man has been arrested in connection with road traffic offences and enquiries are ongoing.”
