People are being asked to share their views on how councils should be reorganised across Sussex. The government wants every part of the country to be served by unitary councils which will mean abolishing district councils in places such as East and West Sussex. Currently, Brighton and Hove City Council is the only unitary council in Sussex. The wider area has two county councils as part of a two-tier system, with 12 districts although some of the district councils are known as boroughs, such as Worthing Borough Council. The government is expected to decide the outcome of the shake up…
Rightmove is trialling a renovation tool with homemovers aimed at helping buyers understand the possible renovation costs of a property. The renovation cost estimator trail is live on selected resale listings through the ‘renovation potential’ tab on Rightmove. It uses artificial intelligence (AI) to look at a property’s floorplan and estimate renovation costs room by room, with a focus on kitchens and bathrooms, which are the most popular areas for refurbishment. There are three finish levels, from basic to high end, and this will give homemovers “flexibility to explore different budgets and plan with confidence”. The estimates are based…

A dangerous offender who strangled a woman and then threatened to publish intimate videos of her has been jailed for more than four years. Even when he was in custody awaiting a trial for those offences, Thomas Taylor continued to harass the woman from Lewes Prison. Last Friday, Hove Crown Court heard Taylor’s victim was still struggling to come to terms with his abuse of her, which she said had been happening for several years. He showed no remorse, shouting from the dock that she was a liar as he sobbed over the sentence passed by Recorder Patricia Hitchcock. Sentencing,…
‘Amid the relentless drive to maximise workspace, this thoughtful retrofit provides a replicable, inspiring, light-touch solution – by building upwards,’ said the AJ editorial team. Optoppen-style building with timber vertical extensions is relatively new in the UK, and it is an important carbon-conscious approach to construction that deserves to be highlighted, they added. Decisions to build upwards can avoid unnecessary demolition, by limiting a building’s footprint and maximising spatial efficiency. New Wave House is also a rare double AJ Architecture Awards category winner this year, demonstrating the power of a great architect/client partnership. The client, New Wave London, is a…
UK chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced new measures to cut energy bills alongside a “pay-per-mile” electric-vehicle levy as part of Labour’s second budget. The policy changes are expected to cut typical household bills by around £134 per year, amid intense political scrutiny of energy prices and a government pledge to reduce them. This cut is achieved through a combination of moving a portion of renewable-energy subsidies from bills to general taxation and ending a support scheme for energy-efficiency measures. Reeves has also retained a long-standing freeze on fuel-duty rates on petrol and diesel, albeit with a plan to “gradually” reverse…

The biggest part of that is keeping an eye on what’s cooking and getting distracted,” Lierman said. She advised testing smoke detectors before cooking and when family arrives, noting, “So that if you do get distracted and something starts overheating or whatever then you’ll have…
Picture: Niklas Halle’n/AFP via Getty Images The UK’s news landscape could fracture “irreparably” in the next five to ten years with “grim” implications, a new Parliamentary report has warned. The Future of News report from the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee noted that although a “changing news landscape should not be conflated with its imminent demise”, many media publishers will not survive the new dynamics. The report made recommendations for action that could help stave off some of the challenges, ranging from firmer action on AI copyright theft to the creation of news “accelerators” and tax breaks for…
