Workers clearing asbestos from the King Alfred’s basement in preparation for the later demolition of the leisure centre are being harassed, the council says. A planning application was submitted earlier this month for the demolition of the basement which used to house a bowling alley and then a Laserzone next to the Hove leisure centre. Collins Construction has reported a 13% drop in its annual turnover. The fit-out firm reported turnover of £108m for the year to 30 June 2025, down from £124.1m the previous year. Simon Appleby, of Letton in Bucknell, Shropshire, was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday (Monday, December 22) for fraud by false representation. The court was told how the 40-year-old was a handyman for an elderly woman in the south of Shropshire from September 2019 until she passed away in December 2022. Following the woman’s death, her family contacted police to raise concerns about a number of payments made to Appleby that amounted to £102,627 over the 39-month period.
