Recruiting a Modern Apprentice could be the best business decision you make this year. Here, Forth Valley College outlines why it works for both employer and trainee.
Forth Valley College is supporting local trade businesses by helping them train and retain the next generation of skilled workers through our Modern Apprenticeship programmes in Painting & Decorating and Bricklaying.
Whether firms are looking to upskill someone already on their team or bringing in new talent, the College provides a complete wraparound service to guide them through recruitment, funding, training and ongoing support.
FVC’s expert staff, industry-standard facilities and collaborative approach mean local employers can invest in their workforce with confidence and see the results in action.
The College’s Painting and Decorating apprentices continue to impress – not just in the workshop, but on the national stage.
Students have flourished, picking up awards at the College’s own awards ceremonies, as well as winning top places at industry recognised national competitions.
Apprentice Kara Ashton, who works with David Borthwick Decorators, produced a stunning decorative finish to earn her place in the PDA Apprentice of the Year 2025 Grand Final, while Daniel Game, who works with Dumbreck Decorators, was recently crowned FVC Apprentice of the Year.
Kenny McNamee from Dumbreck Decorators, said: “We at Dumbreck feel Daniel has come on leaps and bounds in the past year, this is due to the College and the tradesmen instilling good practises onto him. He works on site with very little fuss and seems intent on becoming a better painter. He is good at taking instructions from his tradesman and can carry them out to good effect.
We believe if he keeps up this progress we will have a fine tradesman on our hands at the end of his apprenticeship.

Award-winning building company Haldane Construction Services Ltd, say much of their success is down to getting ‘in with the bricks’ with Forth Valley College’s Modern Apprenticeship programme and taking on young MAs.
Managing Director Peter Archibald has worked closely with Forth Valley College to support a new generation of bricklayers and recommends taking on an apprentice to other firms in the construction industry.
The relationship we have built up with FVC is very positive and the two-way review process feedback between us, the MA themselves, the Apprenticeship Officers and Lecturers works, very well
Peter Archibald
Peter said: “Everyone has input in the process and that helps get an accurate picture of how the MA is performing.”
Colin Rae, FVC Apprenticeship Officer, said: “We understand that taking on a Modern Apprentice is a big decision, and we’re here to make it as simple and beneficial as possible.”
