Advice comes after the forecaster issued yellow and amber weather warnings across parts of the UK

    10:20, 04 Aug 2025Updated 14:45, 04 Aug 2025

The Met Office has urged households to take a number of precautions today (August 4), including closing all windows and doors, as strong gusts of wind are expected in parts of the UK as Storm Floris hits.

Named by the Met Office on Friday, August 1, Storm Floris has been forecast to bring “unseasonably strong” and “potentially disruptive” gusts of winds of up to 90 mph to the UK throughout the course of Monday.

With strong gusts expected, the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning across northern parts of England and Northern Ireland, from 6 am this morning until midnight tonight. An amber warning of wind has also been introduced across Scotland from 10 am today, and will last until 10 pm tonight.

As weather warnings come into force for much of the UK, the Met Office has also issued advice to UK households on how they can stay safe and reduce damage to property during Storm Floris, the Express reports.

As part of this advice, the Met Office has warned UK households to “close and securely fasten” any doors and windows on the outside of their property, as well as to “secure” any loose objects for the duration of the storm.

Issuing advice on how to stay safe during a storm, the Met Office said: “Close and securely fasten doors and windows, particularly those on the windward side of the house, and especially large doors such as those on garages.

“Secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture or anything else that could be blown into windows and other glazing and break them.”

They added: “Park vehicles in a garage, if available; otherwise keep them clear of buildings, trees, walls and fences. Close and secure loft trapdoors with bolts, particularly if roof pitch is less than 30°.

“If the house is fitted with storm shutters over the windows then ensure that these are closed and fastened. If chimney stacks are tall and in poor condition, move beds away from areas directly below them.”

Yellow weather warnings, which will last until 11.59pm tonight, apply to 68 regions across the UK. Amber warnings have also been applied to a further 28 regions across Scotland, with these alerts lasting until 10pm.

The Met Office has also issued advice to motorists and pedestrians to take extra care when travelling. In some cases the Met Office has warned drivers to only travel if their journey is “really necessary”.
