Emergency services have descended on a railway line following reports of an electrical fire which has “lit up the sky”.

Fire crews and police are in attendance near Roman Way in Cheriton, Folkestone, this evening.

Eyewitnesses report seeing white smoke billowing across the town and hearing “a massive noise”, while a video shows the area glowing in the sky.

Describing how the blaze “lit up the sky”, Rik Clark said: “I was stood in my back garden and suddenly saw the bright light in the sky rising.

“The silence was broken by a roaring sound. The light changed colour towards the end, then it went dark and silent again within two minutes.”

Two fire engines attended the scene shortly before 7.45pm – finding no signs of fire.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service monitored the scene, along with Network Rail and British Transport Police, to ensure it was safe.

    Crews left at about 9.30pm.

Network Rail and British Transport Police have been contacted for comment.
