UK households are being urged to prepare 7 emergency items before this weekend as Storm Goretti sweeps the country. The Met Office has issued multiple severe amber and yellow weather warnings on Thursday and Friday, with the storm described as a “multi-hazard” event that will bring snow, heavy rain, strong winds and ice, causing widespread disruption to many. The storm is forecast to bring up to 10cm of snow widely over parts of Wales and the Midlands, while some areas could see up to 30cm of snowfall.

A period of strong winds is also forecast across southwestern areas on Thursday afternoon and evening, with an amber warning covering parts of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, where up to 90mph gusts are likely in exposed areas. Several yellow weather warnings have also been issued for snow, ice and rain, affecting much of the country on Thursday and Friday.

The Met Office has warned that the storm could cause damage to buildings and homes, travel delays and cancellations to bus, train, ferry services and flights, and there is a “good chance” that power cuts could occur, which could affect other services like mobile phone coverage.

To prepare for the storm, households in 123 areas are being urged to prepare the following seven emergency items on Thursday and Friday where power cuts are likely due to snow and strong winds:

    • Torches
    • Batteries
    • Candles
    • Matches or lighters
    • Blankets
    • Warm clothing
    • Mobile phone power pack

In its advice on staying safe in snow, the Met Office said: “You could be without food, heat or light if you are cut off by snow and can’t access services and amenities for a number of days. Act now and be prepared, by getting the essentials together that you could need:

    • Torches and batteries
    • Candles and matches or lighters
    • Plenty of blankets and warm clothing.”

The forecaster added: “People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance and it’s easy to do. The essentials that could help you cope with a power cut are:

    • candles and matches or lighters,
    • torches and batteries,
    • a mobile phone power pack.”
