GB News brought the morning show to an unexpected halt as it was revealed that Meghan Markle has reportedly made contact with her ailing father, Thomas Markle, following his health battle. During Wednesday’s breakfast show (December 10), Ellie Costello interrupted the normal morning schedule to issue a major update on the Duchess of Sussex’s relationship with her estranged father.
Their reconnection comes after the 81-year-old had to have his leg amputated below the knee last week. It took place at a hospital in Cebu, Philippines, where he relocated to in January of this year. Now, following a week of no contact with his daughter, the corporation has revealed that Thomas Markle has since received a letter from the mum-of-two.
A spokesman for the Duchess of Sussex told GB News on Wednesday morning: “Given that a Daily Mail reporter has remained at her father’s bedside throughout, broadcasting each interaction and breaching clear ethical boundaries, it has been exceedingly difficult for the duchess to contact her father privately, despite her efforts over the past several days.
“With the support of reliable and trusted contacts, her correspondence is now safely in his hands.” The health battle has intensified public interest in the long-running estrangement between the Duchess and Mr Markle.
Their relationship soured shortly before the former Suits star’s wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, after her father arranged for staged photographs with the paparazzi weeks before pulling out of the ceremony due to health complications.
Since then, they have had limited communication, and it is understood that the 81-year-old is yet to meet his son-in-law or his grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. A spokesperson for the Sussexes previously told GB News that Meghan had emailed her father on Friday (December 5), but Mr Markle and the staff at Cebu hospital stated they had not received any communication from her and that she no longer has an active email address for him.
Those close to the mum-of-two insist that attempts were made by the duchess, but the details used we out of date. Earlier this week, Mr Markle issued a public appeal for reconciliation, adding that he hoped his medical emergency might “help tear down the walls between us and bring our family back together.”
Meghan’s father is expected to remain in the hospital until his wound has healed sufficiently and a prosthetic limb has been fitted. It has been reported that Mr Markle has already started gentle physiotherapy sessions.
