The Painter’s Apprentice by Paul Falzon, who works for Cyfle Building Skills and is based in Ceredigion, chronicles his early life, time as an apprentice, and the personal and professional experiences that shaped his career.

Mr Falzon wrote the memoir during the 2020 pandemic, reflecting on a life deeply rooted in the trades.

He said: “I wanted to capture not just my story, but the broader value of craft, community, and mentorship.

“My own experience has taught me how transformative apprenticeship can be, not just for skills, but for confidence and direction.”

Mr Falzon currently serves as training manager for Cyfle Building Skills, supporting apprentices across Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion through the organisation’s shared apprenticeship scheme.

The scheme recently surpassed the milestone of 1,000 apprentices in South Wales, and allows trainees to rotate between different employers and construction sites while working towards their formal qualifications.

The memoir recalls Mr Falzon’s upbringing, college life, and years as an apprentice, and is filled with stories, humour, and reflections on the value of practical skills.

He also explores the role of community and mentorship in shaping his outlook and career.

Cyfle Building Skills helps young adults gain sustainable employment in construction through hands-on training, mentoring, and work experience.

The scheme covers a wide range of trades including painting and decorating, bricklaying, plastering, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and technical roles.

Cyfle also runs onsite work experience programmes through partnerships with colleges, combining classroom learning with practical site placements.

With health and safety training, careers guidance, and personal mentoring included in the scheme, Cyfle aims to equip apprentices with the tools for long-term employment in the industry.

The Painter’s Apprentice is currently available exclusively at Victoria Bookshop, 6 Bridge Street, Haverfordwest, SA61 2AD.

Enquiries can be directed to email@victoriabookshop.co.uk or by calling 01437 762750.
