The Environment Agency has warned of possible flooding in six areas of Sussex amid this weekend’s wet and windy weather forecast.
People are warned to take care at Climping beach, near Littlehampton, as flooding could occur “two hours either side of Friday’s evening tide” at 11.30pm.
The flooding is expected to impact land and fields at Climping, with large waves reaching further than the seafront and the possibility of water pooling near properties and in Climping Street car park.
The agency has also warned of “strong south westerly force six wind”.
Rising river levels at the River Medway could lead to flooding of low lying land and roads near East Grinstead and Crowborough on Saturday, December 6, the Environment Agency said.
The full list of flood alerts for Sussex includes:
- Climping beach
- Rivers Eden and Eden Brook
- Upper River Medway
- River Mole and its tributaries from Kinnersley Manor to South Hersham
- River Rother and its tributaries from Turks Bridge to the Royal Military Canal
- Upper River Mole, Ifield Brook, Gatwick Stream and Burstow Stream
In Brighton, rain is set to persist from Friday afternoon until Saturday morning, according to the Met Office.
A spokesman for the Met Office said: “Rain, often heavy, will clear east with broken cloud and scattered heavy showers following, these with a chance of hail and thunder. Remaining windy with a chance of coastal gales.”
Saturday is set to be “breezy with sunny spells and scattered heavy showers” with “a chance of hail and thunder”.
Christmas events have been cancelled today due to the adverse weather, such as Little Chelsea Festive Fun and Fireworks in Eastbourne.
Chichester Festive Market has also been cancelled tomorrow, although it is expected to go ahead on Sunday, December 7.
