THE landscape architecture firm that will lead the design of outdoor areas within the government’s planned revamp of Fort Regent has been chosen following a “rigorous and competitive” tender process, the Jersey Development Company has announced.
London-based urban design studio Spacehub will work on a range of activities and amenities that will form part of the £110m regeneration scheme, including a pump track, skate park, ball court, parkour area, outdoor bouldering space and a children’s play garden.
The JDC has stated that Spacehub, which was founded in 2010, was chosen following a “rigorous and competitive tender process”.
Announcing the news, the States-owned entity said that there are “no commercial landscape architecture practices currently operating in Jersey”, noting that no local firms had put themselves forward.
“Spacehub’s appointment therefore ensures the regeneration benefits from specialist
international expertise,” the statement added.
It follows the unveiling of the government’s latest vision for the site, which will be closed for around three years while the multi-million-pound regeneration is delivered.
Announcing Spacehub’s appointment as a landscape architect for the project, the JDC said: “Their approach centres on creative thinking, collaboration, and delivering design solutions that respond to the unique character and ecology of each site.”
Other elements of the outdoor plans include enhanced public-realm areas and improved access routes connecting three main levels – Pier Road, the ditch level and the ramparts.
“Accessibility is a central priority within the overall landscape strategy,” the JDC statement continued.
Spacehub is collaborating with international pump-track design firm Velo Solutions, as well as UK-based skatepark design specialists Maverick Skate.
It is also working with the Fort Regent project team “to involve children and young people in shaping several key outdoor elements of the regeneration” through a series of interactive workshops.
“These workshops form part of a wider programme designed to ensure young people have a meaningful voice in influencing the next chapter of Fort Regent’s transformation, with a particular focus on the design of its outdoor spaces,” the JDC statement added.
