East Sussex County Council staff from the Through Care and Separated Children teams completed an Everest stair climb challenge at St Mary’s House in Eastbourne, raising more than £1,200 for the council’s Through Care Fund.
The challenge saw the team collectively climb more than 50,000 steps in just five hours, equivalent to scaling the world’s tallest mountain.
Bob Bowdler, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for children and families, said: “I offer my huge congratulations to those who gave up their own time (and shoe leather) to take part in this incredible challenge.
“The funds raised through their magnificent effort will ensure the young people in our care can come together this Christmas to have fun and celebrate the festive season.”
Funds raised will support enrichment activities and cultural trips for children in care and care leavers, as well as the annual Christmas party for children in the county council’s care.
The challenge was held earlier in November to mark National Care Leavers Month.
Each participant climbed the building’s stairs 86 times to reach the equivalent height of Mount Everest.
One participant, named only as Patrick, said: “Thank you so much to everyone who has donated. We really are so grateful. Your generosity will ensure we can put on a wonderful Christmas party for the young people we support.”
Anyone wishing to donate can contact the Through Care team at ThroughCareAdmin@eastsussex.gov.uk.
