When designing your kitchen, every little detail requires careful planning to create a welcoming yet stylish space worthy of your home’s most important room. As one of the main elements of any kitchen layout, your cabinets deserve special attention, as they can make or break your kitchen aesthetic. But with so many options available, choosing the right kitchen cabinet style for your space can become a real challenge. That’s when current trends can help move things along, as seeing what other people are choosing right now can lend you some inspiration. One rising trend that stands out as a way to infuse your kitchen with warmth and sophistication is curved kitchen cabinets.

While sharp edges and straight lines had a long moment, trends are now coming back around to the soft look and flowy feel that curves bring to kitchen designs. But despite curved cabinets’ ability to modernize your kitchen while keeping it unique and inviting, not all design experts are embracing the trend. As interior designer Madelaine Mayer explained to Real Simple, the potentially limited storage and special accessibility requirements of curved cabinetry might make some people rethink this choice, especially if you’re working with a small kitchen.

Are curved cabinets the right choice for your kitchen?

While some believe curved cabinets can actually help optimize the use of your kitchen space with hidden storage solutions, this type of cabinetry typically comes with a reduced storage capacity compared to square-shaped options. Plus, as Mayer pointed out, you need free space on both the sides and the front of these cabinets to fully open their doors (via Real Simple), which means you’d need to account for more demanding access requirements. Meanwhile, together with style, high functionality is one of the hallmarks of a good kitchen design. If efficient storage and optimal access are your priority, it may not be worth bringing the stunning curvy cabinet trend into your home.

On the other hand, if you have enough storage and access space as is — or these points just aren’t your top concern — curved cabinets could be right up your alley. They’re especially well-suited for open layouts, as their flowy quality promotes movement and encourages natural transitions within the space. Plus, the elegant look helps them fit right into any kitchen aesthetic, making them a great choice for traditional and contemporary kitchen styles alike.

If you like the idea of round shapes but don’t want to sacrifice your kitchen space, you can try some of the other stunning ways homeowners are bringing curves into their kitchens. It doesn’t have to be through your cabinets. For example, you could go for a curved kitchen island or worktop. If you’d rather start small, you can limit the curved shapes to some sculptural statement lights or thoughtfully placed curved vases. With this approach, you can enjoy the best of both worlds — the soothing, warm effect of curved lines and the unmatched functionality of ample storage space.
