Lidl is set to open its 1,000th UK store next Thursday in East Grinstead, West Sussex.

The discounter is marking the occasion – which comes 31 years after it opened its first UK supermarket in 1994 – by giving away 1,000 ‘gingerbread store kits’ online.

The kits can be built into a model of its 1,000th store, made entirely from gingerbread, according to Lidl.

Ten of the kits will also contain £100 Lidl Plus vouchers.

The kits will be made available on Lidl’s website at 10am on Thursday 27 November, while stocks last.

The kits were designed by Sussex-based gingerbread expert Fay Miller. A larger version has also been constructed to display at the 1,000th store throughout the festive season.

“Reaching our 1,000th UK store is a huge milestone for Lidl, and we want to celebrate in a way that everyone across the country can enjoy,” said Lidl GB marketing director Joanna Gomer.

“Our gingerbread houses have been a customer favourite, so we mixed things up a bit by creating a special kit that not only showcases our new East Grinstead store, but also captures the fun and festive spirit of the season.”

Lidl has been the fastest-growing bricks & mortar supermarket each month for more than two years in Worldpanel data. Latest data this week showed its sales were up 10.8% year on year in the 12 weeks to 2 November, pushing its grocery market share to 8.2%, up from 7.7%.
